Why Was Jesus Born in A Manger?

We just recently celebrated Christmas and I wanted to give everyone an encouraging message. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Word of God is pure nutrition for your spirit. But if we dig a little deeper, we can discover just how truly Jesus drove home this point. Several times throughout the gospels, Jesus made reference to his body as ‘the bread come down from heaven’ and said that whosoever eats his body and drinks his flesh has eternal life (John 6). What is he referring to? Cannibalism?

This was a hard message for his disciples to grasp, for they did not really understand who He was. According to John 1:1, Jesus is not just the Son of God, but He is literally the Word of God.  The point that Jesus was trying to drive home is that we need to eat him (the Word) daily for our sustenance. His Word is the lifeline we need just like food is needed for the body.

Still not convinced? Check out this illustration. Jesus was born in Bethlehem in a manger. I am sure you have seen the Christmas stories with the nativity scenes and the wisemen, etc. Yet, most people completely miss the underlying meaning behind it.

Everything in scripture has meaning, nothing just happens. Jesus could have been born anywhere, why a manger? What exactly is a manger anyway? I’m a city guy from New Jersey, so I had no clue what a manger is, as I’m sure most people reading this have no clue. A manger is a feeding trough, where the animals (sheep) would come to get their food. Jesus was born in this feeding trough, layed in swaddling clothes for everyone to see. From his birth it is evident that we are supposed to feed off of his flesh (the Word) just as the sheep feed off the trough (manger).

I bet you never heard that analogy in your child’s Christmas play.

Jesus, or the Word of God, is to be highly valued and never taken lightly. It is our protection. In John 6, Jesus referred to himself as the ‘bread come down from heaven’ (translated manna). Recall in Numbers 21 when the children of Israel began to despise the manna they were receiving daily. As they began to complain, fiery snakes came out of the forest and bit and killed many Israelites that day. Where did those fiery snakes come from? Those snakes were always there in the wilderness. But once they began to despise (think little of) their manna from heaven, they lost their protection from God, allowing the snakes to have an all you can eat buffet on them. In the same way, once you begin to lose sight of the Word of God, and think of it in little regard, you give the enemy permission to have an all you can eat buffet on you too! It is your protection, never forget that.

If you have taken the Word lightly, there is hope for you today. In Numbers 21:7, as the people were being destroyed by the serpents, God instructed Moses to create a brass serpent and put it on a pole. And any man who had been bitten, if he looked upon that brass serpent, he would be healed. Well today we have a more sure word of assurance than that brass serpent that Moses created. We have the Word which became flesh and died for our sins. And any man that has been bitten in any way by the devil can be totally set free, by believing on His name. Christ is our redemption and hope of glory! Hallelujah!

I think I just typed myself happy! Praise Him!

    • Thank you for reading my blog. I speak from firsthand experience that there is extraordinary power in the name of Jesus. People are healed, addictions are broken, and demons tremble at the name of Jesus. My whole life has been transformed and each day I live to see others transformed by the power that is present in that name. The name Yeshua was actually a very common name during that time period, like Jesus is common in the Spanish culture today. But something supernatural happens when you call upon ‘the name of the Messiah’ and have faith in it. The name is translated Jesus, Yeshua Hamashiach, Jesus Christo (Spanish),Yesu Mesiha (Indian), YeSu Nim (Korean). Whatever language you speak it in, if you believe it, the supernatural power of God is released
