What is the Purpose of Healing, Signs, and Wonders?

What is the purpose for healing, signs, and wonders? There are a lot of misconceptions. Plain and simply, believers are never to follow signs and wonders. Believers are to follow the Word of God. The unbelievers follow signs and wonders to lead them to the Word and eternal life. God confirms his Word with signs and wonders. Therefore, believers who are doing the Word, signs and wonders will follow them.

In my professional life, I have a background in advertising and promotion. The key to good advertising is to get your message in a place where it can receive the greatest amount of exposure. This is why Super Bowl ads costs millions to air, and an internet banner ad costs as little as $10.

Think of healing, signs, and wonders, as God advertising who he is to those who don’t already know him. It would be pointless for Nike to release its newest ad campaign to just the cafeteria and lobby of its corporate headquarters in Oregon. Why? Because the employees of Nike already know about Nike. In the same way, each year, there are hundreds of healing conventions and prophetic conventions all across the country in churches, ministering to fellow believers who already know Jesus. Now it’s good to be encouraged every now and then, but the people who really need it are the people outside the four walls of the church. They are the ones without Christ, and are truly hopeless. They do not know about their covenant with God. Who is going to minister to them?

Through a demonstration of God’s healing power, you are able to display the Almighty God to the masses. In Exodus, Moses did not try to verbally convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. But by a display of amazing supernatural signs and wonders, Pharaoh was face to face with the Most High God. Once you view signs and wonders as a sign to the unbelievers, you will be more confident to step out on faith because you will be convinced that God will supply the miracles. It’s not you doing it, its Him working through you. I’ll use a modern day example. I mentioned yesterday about the amazing feat of Tim Tebow, the quarterback for the Denver Broncos, and his stats of 316 pass yards, 31.6 yards per pass, and TV rating of 31.6 (all reference to John 3:16). You can read the article here.

Now while most Christians were probably debating whether or not this is an actual sign and wonder, here is the actual truth. On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday (the time of this writing), John 3:16 was a top trending topic on Yahoo. What that means is that for the past 3 days millions of people were searching ‘what is John 3:16’. So while the Christians were debating, the unbelievers were researching that salvation scripture and being saved. That is a sign: something that cannot be explained, and leads people to Christ.

As I mentioned earlier, believers are never to seek after signs. Signs and wonders follow you. A believer who is constantly seeking after signs will ultimately fall into sin. This is because satan will eventually give you a sign that will deceive you and cause you to start following some weird unbiblical doctrine. The only thing we as believers need is the Word of God. Once you have tasted the overwhelming love of God, and the amazing power of the Holy Spirit, what else could you possibly be seeking for? Stick to the Word.

So this brings us to the controversial topic of healing. Should you fly to the healing conference in India or Africa to have the anointed man of God pray for you? Should you wait in the healing line for the pastor to lay hands on you? I’m not against any anointed man of God, but if you are already a born again believer, you don’t need anyone to lay hands on you. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you! So stop being lazy and get in your Word and find out what God said concerning healing and receive it now. Leave the healing lines for those unbelievers that do not know they have a right to healing. Believers have a ‘do-it-yourself kit’, also known as the Bible.

So to recap, signs and wonders are tools that you have at your disposal to win the lost. But if you follow the signs and wonders, you will become lost. Follow the Word.

  1. You are absolutely right. Not only do we have to verify all things through the Word, we also need to seek the Word in the context of Christ’s finished work, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Word is absolute and interprets itself, but our “searching the Scriptures” needs to point us to Jesus, and only the Holy Spirit can take a text word – and teaches us about THE WORD. Otherwise some wise Pharisee will still show us the correct precise answer and still not communicate the truth. More accurately, signs and wonders follow the “Living Word”.
