The Shocking Truth About Praying For the Sick

This post might be the most important one I have ever written. It may offend many, but the truth many times hurts. This is for people who desire to minister to the sick. All throughout the world, in church services everywhere we see people praying for the sick. And very rarely do they see any results. Why is this? Have you ever asked God to heal anyone and saw nothing happen?

This is because many are going about it the wrong way. Let me give an example of how we see praying for healing in the church today, “Oh God would you please heal my Aunt Betty. She is a dear servant of yours, she loves you so, please heal her. In Jesus name. Amen.” This is going about it the wrong way.

If you are asking God for healing; begging God for healing; crying out to God for healing… then you are praying incorrectly. No where in the New Testament does it say to pray to God for healing. Nor does it say to ask God for healing. I know this might be a shock to many of you reading this.

For the born again believer, healing is inside of you. Healing is to be released from the inside of you, not begged for. It is already in you. Let me explain. There are 3 parts to you- body, soul, and spirit. When you receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, He instantly re-creates your spirit to be identical to Him. Yet your soul (your thinking, emotions, will, etc) and physical body do not change. If you like to eat hotdogs and watch the Lakers before you got saved, the day after you got saved you probably will still like to eat hotdogs and watch the Lakers.

Change comes when you re-new your mind to the word of God. When you renew your mind (soul), it begins to line up with your spirit (which is perfect).  Healing is going to flow from your spirit. Yet with most Christians, their soul is so clogged up with worries, fears, hours of television, and other junk that their spirit does not shine through. It is like a gorgeous diamond being covered and hidden in the rough.

What did Jesus actually deposit in your spirit? He deposited life in you. The very life of God, everlasting life. In John 10:10, Jesus said I have come so that you may life and have life more abundantly. Jesus also said out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water. Inside you is a well of eternal life springing up (John 4:14). So when you touch or lay hands on someone, you are depositing the life of God into them. Let’s break this down a little. Life is the opposite of death. Healing is the seed for life, just like sickness and disease is the seed for death. So when you lay hands on someone you are injecting life and healing into them. This seed of healing is so strong it wipes out the seed of death (which is sickness).

Your born again spirit wants to lay hands on every sick person it comes across. It wants to go to the hospital and clear it out, and go to the morgue and raise the dead. Yet if your mind is not renewed to the word of God, you will not go. In fact, if you have bad teaching in your soul, you may have been taught that you cannot go; only the ‘anointed bishop or apostle can go’. This is a day in which we restore the truth of the Word of God back to the church. Healing is available to all!

So let’s go back to our original example concerning healing the sick. Instead of praying, “Oh Lord, will you please heal Aunt Betty…” it should sound more like this. “In the name of Jesus, Aunt Betty be healed NOW!” You have been authorized by God to heal the sick. Asking God to heal the sick is like a police officer asking the police chief to come out and make an arrest of a robbery that is right in his face!

It’s actually not even “praying for the sick”. It really is just commanding sickness to go. Did you ever see anyone in the New Testament asking God to heal? Or did they just go out and do it? The only place where “prayer” and “sick” are mentioned in the same context is in the 5th chapter of James, advising the sick to call for the elders, and the elders will “pray” and heal him. Mark 16:18 says believers shall lay hands on the sick, and the sick shall recover. It does not say anything about asking God to heal them. Quit asking God to do what He has already empowered you to do. In Acts 3 when Peter took the lame man by the hand in front of the temple, he did not ask God to heal the man. Peter said, “Such as I have, I give to you…Now rise up and walk!” What did Peter have? The same thing you have. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you!!

So if you lay hands on a sick person, how do you know it will work? These 4 truths must resonate with you:

1. The Word says its so! By his stripes you were healed

2. The Holy Spirit is inside you

3. Jesus paid the price for all healing at the cross

4. He told you to do it! (Jesus wouldn’t lie to you)

The purpose of this blog and my healing videos is not to exalt myself and say ‘Wow. Look at me!” The sole purpose is that someone, even if it is 1 person out of 1000 who reads it will wake up and say, “I can do that too”. Jesus is with you and in you. You can do it!

Now go shake up the world!

  1. Your ministry caught my eye because it spoke of demonstrating the power of God. This is so needed for the body of Christ. I have your ministry on my facebook and my intercessory prayer page in hope that others will read and begin to demonstrate God’s Power. Thank you so much…Elder Dianne Hamilton

  2. Great Blog.

I agree, as one who is used in the gifts of healing’s.

My father Gino has been battling against dementia for about 2 years. We have had many victories but this thing continues to attack. Looking for complete victory for what we bind on earth has been bound in Heaven and what we loose on earth has been loosed in Heaven. So be it in Jesus’ name.

  5. amazing and true ,love this

  6. I stumbled across your blog and It’s something that I desire for God to use me in. I am a massage therapist and I want God to heal my patients and save their souls. I will walk out in Faith and Trust God to do His work through me and I will tell you the results.

  7. i believe all things are possible through god amen
i ask for prayers to heal my swollen feet and legs

  8. Amen Brother. Check out Roger Sapp, Curry Blake, Mike Endicott, Andrew Wommack too – also saying similar stuff. Jesus is the complete revelation of the Father so lets look to the anointed one and what he reveals of the Father’s will in healing – i.e. it is yes and amen in Jesus. Just copy what he and the disciples did in the NT

  9. Thanks for the research and teaching!

  10. Pastor!

Let me just say that I agree with you, yet I disagree with you. First off, we do not order God to work any miracles in any one’s life. It is strictly according to God’s Will. Case in point, stated by Jesus- John 6:38, “for I have come down from heaven not to do my Will but to do the Will of him who sent me.” So as much as we declare healing in someone’s life whether, physical, mental or spiritual, it’s still up to God to make the final decision. Hence, that is why sometimes when we pray God doesn’t heal the person.

Agree with the part though, yes we need to introspect ourselves before we intercede for anyone else. There is no way, for example, a person can intercede and yet they struggle with faith and for that, brilliant point made.

    • It is God’s will that alll be healed – God is not a respecter of man, so to say it’s up to God to heal and if that person is not healed it’s because it’s not God’s will is wrong. Jesus healed EVERYONE who came to Him. He did not send anyone away not healed. Some people have to contend for their healing, because the enemy will continue to attack and tell them they are sick or in physical pain, but that’s a lie from the pit of hell! James 4:7 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Set him to flight when he comes at you with lies! And then Isaiah 53:5 says: “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.” WE ARE HEALED – That’s not a maybe, it’s a definite! And it’s for everyone, not just for some – Praise God!

Mmm, but Racquel, may I ask, what is the will of God concerning our health? What was Christ’s example when he was here on earth? The only reference made to Christ not healing was where the WEord recorded Jesus was unable to do much because of the people’s unbelief. There is a lot God has already done; ours is to applicate in faith, knowing what His will is; and I am yet to read in His word where it is not His will to heal and deliver. What I agree with tho is that we must know God, and as recounted in Romans 12 vv 1 and 2, and His will …….God bless you for effecting this forum to enable the full Gospel to be spread.

    • Graham Chown Says:

Racquel, God declares Himself as healer in Exodus 15 and in Malachi 3 we see that He never changes…….any failures to see healing are entirely down to us. How can the prayer of faith be prayed if we think that God is fickle ?

  11. True Brother Troy. I have been trying to teach People, not to beg God for Healing, it has already been given. We are to simply take Power and Authority in Jesus Name and Rebuke that Sickness.
The Holy Spirit told me to pray for an 8 year old Girl, (For I saw that The Holy Ghost was on Her in the form of a Dove.) and she began to speak with other Tongues, (No Coaching whatsoever).
The first thing She wanted to do is go home and to Lay hands and pray for her Father who had back problems.
She also said to me that she was smelling the fragrance of all different flowers. I take that to be Her sweet young Innocence.

  13. Gentle folks!
Followers of God’s Will, my question then is, why is it that sometimes people aren’t healed? Why is it that some Christians are poor, while some rich? Why is it that sometimes when you pray for a husband/ wife God chooses not to bless you with one? Does that make God a bad God? I think not! The word of God says “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his Cross and follow Me.” That means that the Christian life will have struggles, trust me! The Christian life although a blessing is not always an easy road. Sometimes God will grant our requests and sometimes He won’t.

As a matter a fact, the Christian lifestyle is filled with all kinds of trials and temptation. I strongly say again, that I am a servant of God, me and God are not buddies, nor colleagues, He is the Master of my life and for that reason, I don’t order Him, it’s only according to His perfect Will.

Gentle people, followers of God’s Will, I stand today a strong testimony 14 years of serving God and I make no mistake in disagreeing! I have prayed so much for certain things and God chose not to grant it and later on I see the reason why and I praise Him. Remember this, Romans 8: 28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” As said before, great points made, but the Lord of my life, I will demand nothing from Him.

Scriptures on God’s Will to read:
    Exodus 18:15, Romans 12:2.

    However, most importantly, read this scripture;
    1 Peter 4:19
    New International Version (NIV)
19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

  14. Racquel, you must search the scriptures for yourself to find out what the promises of God are (vs a human desire that’s not specifically promised, such as a spouse). If God has promised something to you in His Word, it is then available to you through faith. His Word is ironclad. God is not a man that He should lie.

Salvation, healing, prosperity, deliverance from demonic oppression are examples of promises of God which were purchased through the shed blood of Christ and are available through faith. Will all men receive? Of course not. Some will not believe, some will not be aware of the promises, some will not even attempt to receive, and others have been taught these promises are not even available. But the man who will believe in His heart and act on faith will indeed receive.
