So What Exactly Is True Repentance??

Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand! If you have been in church long enough, chances are you have heard that scripture. However the chances that you know the true meaning of repentance is very small. Most think it means, “Ask God to forgive you, because the end is near!”

Repentance is a prerequisite to living in the kingdom of God. Yet, because most do not know what repentance means, they are living far below the standard of the kingdom of God, and missing out on its amazing benefits and privileges. The kingdom of God is God’s domain: His system and way of operating. In His kingdom there is no sickness, no poverty, no sin, depression, envy, murder, etc.

In the English language, the definition for repent means to feel sorry for sin, to feel guilty.  However the actual word used in the greek means something much different. The word in the greek is “metanoia”  which means to change your thinking, change your mind. It literally means to do a 180 where sin and wrongful thinking is concerned.

So what is the big difference Pastor Troy?

You can feel sorry or guilty for sin, but that does not mean you will change. Many in the church are convicted sinners, meaning they ‘feel sorry’ for bad things they have done, but is this ‘true heartfelt repentance?

‘Then how can we tell who is really saved and who is not? The truest evidence of heartfelt repentance is change. If you were going in one direction, full of lies, fornicating, evil, full of envy and strife, and now you are full of love, joy, peace, temperance, etc, that is a good indicator. The change will reflect the character and nature of Christ, also known as the fruit of the Spirit. The apostle Paul in Galatians 5 highlights the differences between the flesh (ungodly nature) vs the Fruit of the Spirit (godly nature).

There are many debates in church circles right now concerning grace: radical grace, heretical grace, ultra-grace, etc. The bottom line is that you can not change yourself apart from God. Where the law failed because fallen men could not keep it, God said He would give you a new spirit and literally write the law on the tablet of your hearts. All you have to do is be willing to let him change you! As you are willing, your nature changes and you will resemble Christ. He isn’t there to throw a lightning bolt at you if you mess up, nor is He condemning you about it. The wrath and penalty for all sin was taken upon Jesus at the cross. So now He is there to help you and love you (and correct you) into full spiritual maturity.

The grace message, in any form does not apply to unbelievers. This is because there is no power working in them to change them. No matter how hard you try, you cannot change you. It is like you standing in a pool of mud with only a dirty washcloth to try to clean yourself. Will you come out clean, even if you scrubbed really hard? Of course not. It is the same way when we try to apply a message of grace with someone who has never received the Spirit of God. No change will happen. They will just find ways to justify sin and break the rules to suit their corrupted hearts.

For those who have received the Spirit of God and want real change, how do you change? According to Romans 12-1-2, our job is to present our bodies as a living sacrifice. Be willing to give your body and your mind to God, and you will see change. As you read and study and DO the Word, change will inevitably come your way. The way you used to think concerning an ungodly topic will change. No one has to give you a set of “do’s and don’ts” because the Spirit of God is directing your path and leading you into all truth.

This is true repentance. It is a changing of the mind, a mind renewal. It is a sanctification that will make you resemble Christ. You didn’t do it, you just allowed the Spirit within you do His job.

This is what I love about Christianity. It is truly a personal deal, only you really know you. Jesus said that the wheat and the tares would grow together (the saved and unsaved), so you don’t really know who is truly genuine and who is not. I just saw the movie “The Dark Knight Rises” and Christian Bale portrayed Batman so well I might actually think he was Batman. But we all know he was acting. It is the same way in church. Stop trying to judge others and run your race effectively. This is why I tend not to answer many hypothetical situations like, “What if a person believed and now they are in perpetual sin, will they lose their salvation?” “What if someone is saved, but uses the grace as an occasion to sin?” I hate these type of questions. Just run your race, and let God deal with the  “fakers”, it is not your job to pick out the wheat from the tares. However don’t be foolish either. If the fruit someone is showing you is clearly not godly on a consistent basis,  then… (I’ll let you fill in the rest)

If you want to live like Christ lived (in the kingdom of God system), you must renew your mind to His Word. Repent from anything or any teaching that is opposite to the word of God. Do you think that some sickness is ok, to teach you a lesson? Repent. Do you think that sex outside of marriage is ok in some situations? Repent. Do you think that only those Christians with a special gift are supposed to heal the sick? Repent.

This is a continual process until your thinking lines up directly with Christ’s thinking. As this happens, positive change will inevitably happen in your life, and you will be made whole (health, finances, relationships, sound mind, etc).

So today, repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand!
