The Supernatural Power of Love

So let’s talk love. Love is one of those topics that everyone thinks they know everything about. Yet what most people fail to grasp is that the love of God is the power of God.

God is not faith. God is not healing. God is not power. All of those things comprise of God, and are attributes of God, but plain and simply God is love. Very few times do people correlate the power of God with the love of God.

So at our church in Los Angeles, I am going to dig deep and explore the supernatural power of God for the entire month of August. I understand that many people are outside of Los Angeles and cannot come to these services, but the on-demand MP3 audio sermons are available 24 hours a day.

In the Greek, the word love has 4 different definitions, but in English the word love is love. So in English, I love chocolate, says the same thing as I love Jesus.  If you say you love your friend, is that the same love that you have for your daughter? I just described 4 different kinds of love. Each form in the following list goes from weakest to strongest form:

eros love– based on physical attraction. It is the lowest form of love, because it is based on appearance. If appearance changes, so does the love

phileo love– brotherly love. (As is Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love). This love is based on mutual benefit. So if one party stops being kind or doing favors, the love (or friendship) stops

starge love– the love that a mother has for a son/daughter. This love is not based on the actions of the son/daughter, they love simply because of who they are

agape love– the is the unconditional love of God. This is the love that Jesus has for us. It is an unconditional love, meaning there is no condition under which he will not love you or break away from you

In this series, we will be focusing on the agape love of God. Each one of has the capacity to love this way, although it is not easy because it goes against our very nature. The weaker forms of love are all based on a worldly selfish love which is easily broken if a person feels their needs are not being met. According to Romans 5:5 the agape love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit the moment we received Jesus as Lord.

Many people incorrectly think that if they love “without conditions” that someone is going to take advantage of them. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Loving without conditions is the god-kind of love. So if you get God involved, could a person take advantage of God? If you turn the other cheek, will a person actually be able to strike that other cheek? Agape love will totally melt the heart of the other person.

Many years ago, the wife of Smith Wigglesworth (before he was a great man of God) began attending a great church and was totally in love with God. Smith (her husband) did not approve of her attending this church and demanded that she stop going. She refused to stop and said she would keep on going. Smith became so upset he told her that if she went out to that church he would lock the door and she would have to sleep outside. She went to the church anyway, and came home to find the door locked. So she decided to lay down in front of the front door.

The next morning Smith Wigglesworth opens the front door and is amazed that she actually slept outside. She awoke and did not say anything rude or mean, she just looked at him and greeted him, and asked if she could cook him breakfast. Now that is agape love. He was so moved by this expression of love he would go on to become the great man of faith that we know him to be today.

How do you know if your love is agape? Take a look at 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 as a checklist.

Agape checklist:

1. it is longsuffering (meaning it does not change with the circumstances)

2. it is kind

3. it does not envy

4. it is not boastful

5. it is not rude

6. it is not self-seeking, demanding its own way

7. it is not touchy or easily provoked

8. it not fretful or resentful

9. it takes no account of the evil done to it (pays no attention to a suffered wrong)

10. it thinks the best of every situation

11. does not rejoice in evil

12. bears all things, endures all things

Now when many people look at this checklist, the first thing they might think is, what about me? who is going to look out for me? Answer: God will. Or what if someone takes advantage of me? Answer: That’s impossible. As I said earlier, the love of God is the supernatural power of God. So you are actually activating God’s power when you love this way. Don’t look at it as being weak, look at it as the strongest possible thing you could do on Earth.

According to the scriptures, God is love, and it also says God is light. Do you know what the most powerful force is in the earth? A laser. A laser will cut through anything. A laser is simply concentrated light. In the same way, love is just as powerful as any laser… and concentrated love will cut through any situation or circumstance.
