How to Discover and Do the Will of God (Part 2)

In our ministry, we spend a lot of time dismantling sacred cows so that God’s truth can arise. What is a “sacred cow?” A sacred cow is a belief that is held by the church that is not based upon the Word of God, but in the traditions of men, also known as the doctrines of devils. The term comes from India, in which there are millions of starving children, and perfectly healthy cows walking around. Yet they will not eat the cows because they are considered sacred. In the same way, God’s people are starving for truth, and these unbiblical ‘sacred cows’ must be destroyed so God’s people can feed on the Word.

One of the main sacred cows is the notion that God is in control of everything, and that everything that happens is because it is God’s will. If someone believes this, then they will believe that every tragedy is from God, the sickness that killed a family member is from God, and ultimately every bad thing comes from God for some unknown reason that our minds simply cannot understand at the time. No one will admit it, but it is really blaming God for all the bad stuff.

Recently in America, there was a tragedy at the Boston Marathon. If someone believes that God is in control of everything, did God ordain this tragedy? When there is a rapist on the loose, should we prosecute him? or is this some type of God’s judgement, that we just cannot understand. This type of thinking is not supported in any way by the New Testament. It lets the devil run wild as a criminal on the streets. The mindset of Jesus was that He came to enforce the will of His Heavenly Father. The heavenly Father’s will is that none should perish and that all men should be saved.

Here is one of the ways to identify the truth of the Word of God vs. a man made doctrine. God’s word is absolute, universal, black and white. Man’s doctrine is relative, shades of grey. For example, concerning the will of God, it is black and white. Some examples: Do not eat from the tree. Do not steal. Love your neighbor. Heal the sick. Cast out demons.

Satan knows the weakness of man, so he sneaks in after God has already given a black and white command, and then adds some grey. God said, ‘If you eat from the tree, you will die’. Satan crept in and said,’ you shall not surely die, but you shall be like God, knowing good and evil.’ Fast forward a few thousand years to the New Testament, and he does the same thing today. Jesus said, ‘Believers shall lay hands on the sick, and the sick shall recover’. That is a black and white statement. Then the devil creeps in and adds grey. ‘Well sometimes God does not heal for some unknown reason, but it is all according to His great and mysterious plan’. So when this thought creeps in your mind, when you approach someone to be healed, you are not really sure if God will heal, or if it is His will that they should still be sick (for His mysterious purpose).

I wanted to know where this thinking originated from, because it goes against the Word of God. I discovered that it has originated from the teachings of St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD), and is responsible for most the Christian reasoning of the last 1000 years. His teaching emphasized a distant God that you could never really know. He focused on teaching that God’s will is mysterious and could never be known. He taught that everything that happened was ordained by God and God is in control of everything. The Lord works in mysterious ways. Whatever is going to happen will happen. The danger in this teaching is that if you believe that God is behind everything, you will not fight for what God said is yours (that the devil is trying to steal). It gives you no accountability and lets the devil run wild.

The truth of the matter is that God has given man dominion of the earth in Genesis 1. The wars, the genocide, starvation, corruption is not God’s doing, it is man’s doing. None of these things are the will of God. So what did God do about all the bad and crazy stuff going on in the earth? He sent His son, that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life. It is through Christ that God is back in control in our lives. It is through Christ we connect back with our creator. It is through Christ that God’s will is done on the earth. That is why we pray “thy will be done” and have faith, and bind things and loose others. Because if we don’t, God’s will, will not get done.

You must understand that you have a significant part to play in God’s purpose unfolding in these end time events. The purpose of God is going to happen, but the question is whether it will happen through you. Or will he have to raise up someone else to do it? Jesus is not going to come down off the throne and lay hands on sick people in the hospital. He is not going to go into the shopping malls and tell people to come follow Him. He lives in you and expects you to do it. Christians today expect God to do it for them. Paul told Timothy to stir up the gift that is within him. Notice he did not say that God will stir up the gift that is within you? He said for you to stir up the gift.

Of course there are parts of God that are beyond human comprehension. Are there multiple dimensions? How can we transport from between walls? What was life like before the Garden of Eden? Deuteronomy 29:29 says that the secret things belong to the Lord, but the revealed things belong to us. So we are not responsible for knowing things that were not revealed, like how many years ago did Lucifer fall, or other super deep spiritual things. But we are responsible for the revealed things of the Word of God. Things like-have no fear, walk in love, heal the sick, always forgive, etc.

At the end of the day we must understand that this is a war. There is a real devil out there, and his job is to steal, kill, and destroy, and has been doing it for quite some time. Don’t expect him to give up easily. God has given you the tools to overcome him, but he is not going to do it for you. He has given you the Holy Spirit, given you His Word, and even sent warrior guardian angels to protect you. Now we just need you to show up for battle!

One of my favorite scriptures is Matthew 11:12 which says the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. The violent, those who aggressively go after what God has said, are the ones who receive the promise. God is not picking and choosing who gets saved, or who gets healed or delivered. You choose. Will you have violent faith, and pray for someone for hours until you see a breakthrough, or will you cave in and quit after 30 minutes (then make up some false doctrine about how God didn’t want them healed).

Faith begins when the will of God is fully known. After reading this, you now know the will of God, so you can begin. Don’t give up, don’t quit. Stand firm and know that all of heaven is backing you!
